Dental Bonding

What is Dental Bonding?

  • Dental bonding is an alternate treatment to veneers. They are often used to restore teeth that have been cracked, chipped, misarranged, or discolored.
  • Teeth are prepared for bonding by adding roughness to the surface through etching, in order to allow the bonding liquid to better grip the surface of the teeth.
  • Once the bonding sets, resin is applied to the tooth and molded to best fit the desired appearance. After the resin has set, it is polished by the dentist to best fit the natural look of the teeth, and not interrupt the jawline.

Considerations

Bonding is a simple dental procedure that usually only takes one visit to plan and apply, and are used to fix the aesthetic appearance of the tooth. Bonding can last up to five years before it needs to be replaced or repaired, as it is made of a plastic resin that is not a resistant as tooth enamel, leading to chipping and staining more frequently than veneers. However, the procedure for bonding is much easier than the formation of veneers, and is less damaging to the surface of the teeth.
